Oh the Progress

It all started with a loaf of pumpkin bread.

Albeit it was incredibly good pumpkin bread, and it was delivered in the most magical, Normal Rockwell-esque way (by two kind neighbors, in a basket, on Christmas morning), so there was all sorts of good stuff happening with that bread before we even sliced it open. But really, other than cornbread, I’ve never seen my daughter devour something with such unabashed gusto as she did this bread. And she’d never tasted pumpkin bread before. + (and this is the big part) there was no cajoling, no begging, no “I promise you’ll like this, just try it for God’s sake…”

She just popped a bite into her mouth, and then another, and another…until half the loaf was gone.

That was the start.

A few days later during our New Year’s week trip to New Orleans, she also ate (for the first time with very little cajoling) and loved the following items, in no particular order:
  • Jambalaya
  • Dirty rice
  • Cabbage (in full disclosure, she didn’t love the cabbage, but she tried it without gagging, so that’s something…)
  • Black eyed peas

But wait, there’s more. That photo above, that corn, roasted red pepper and edamame succotash. Yep, she tried that too.

Honestly I’m not sure what’s happening here friends. I fear aliens have abducted my kiddo and replaced her with a pint sized epicurean.

So...any new foodie milestones on your front?

Edamame and Corn Succotash

  • 1 bag frozen organic sweet corn
  • 1 bag frozen organic edamame
  • 1 small shallot
  • 2 tbs butter
  • 1 marinated roasted red pepper
  • salt and pepper to taste

Completely thaw the corn and edamame. Sautee the shallot in butter. Add corn and edamame and sautee until cooked through. Dice red pepper and add to the pan, cooking for a few more minutes. Salt and pepper to taste. Especially good with pork chops!

  2. Those are some amazing new foods for a kid! I too am dreaming of food moments like this for my little guy. He did ask for a bite of hamburger the other day...only ate a few bites of the bun. But that was a first for us with this extremely picky (and resistant eater) with some extra GI issues and food allergies thrown in for fun. I'm so happy that your daughter is trying new stuff, and with no cajoling! (The cajoling gets really, really old.) Hooray!!

The recipe you posted sounds delicious for adults AND kids!

    Happy New Year!

  3. I have no idea how I never realized you had a food blog too, but I'm glad I found it today- especially since I have nearly all of those ingredients in the house and that dish looks yummy!

  5. My kids are funny and go back and forth about trying new things. Sometimes I have to beg and plead, and sometimes they just eat it and love it. We do have a rule though. "One bite to be polite." After that one bite, it's up to them.

  7. That really looks good! My kids love edamame (have you tried serving it in the pod? My kids LOVE that!), so I think that it could be a hit!

  8. This week my son age 6 1/2 ate homemade vegetable korma and naan bread (with seeds in which was a first) he used to scoff the korma when age 3 but has since become very fussy so this was a milestone for me.

  10. Just made the succotash tonight and it went over pretty well with most of the family. Hubby loved it, Aidan gave it the thumbs up, and Conor did so so. Can't please everyone. I had to make a few modifications because I did not have roasted peppers or shallots on hand, so just sauted some fresh red pepper and onion instead. We had it with brats and it seemed like a good combo for such a spicy protein.
